Plastics are durable and water-resistant, but their widespread use and improper disposal have caused a global waste crisis. Around 5 trillion plastic bags are used annually, contributing significantly to plastic waste. Over time, plastics break down into toxic microplastics, posing health risks by entering the food chain. Biodegradable plant-based plastics offer an alternative but face high production costs and contribute to microplastic pollution. We propose creating an eco-friendly shopping bag made from PVA-based cold-water-soluble films with a biodegradable water-repellent coating. The bag will be durable and dissolve in hot and cold water without releasing toxic chemicals or microplastics. The project focuses on developing a biodegradable bag using PVA-based polymers, biodegradable plasticizers, and minerals for stability. The bag's strength and water-repellent coating will be thoroughly tested for eco-friendliness and durability, and decomposition will be rigorously assessed.
