Pioneering a novel biofilter process in landbased aquaculture

AKVA Group, as a leader in Recirculating Aquaculture Systems (RAS) and Zero Water Concept (ZWC), is adapting to new market dynamics favoring longer post-smolt and grow-out phases on land. Currently, high nitrate levels in smolt production necessitate significant water usage, with around 300-350 liters of new water required per kilogram of feed. Their existing ZWC technology reduces this ratio to 40 liters/kg feed, but the optimal water usage to maintain nutrient levels without impacting water quality and fish welfare in post-smolt and grow-out stages is still under investigation. To address this challenge, AKVA group is developing a new process within their enhanced biofilter systems to efficiently manage and recycle water, aiming to reduce reliance on dilution and cut new water usage by 30-40%. This involves optimizing nitrification and denitrification phases critical in RAS by 20%, ensuring effective nutrient management while minimizing new water consumption. By integrating advanced scientific research and high-resolution monitoring, we aim to deepen understanding of chemical and biological processes in biofilters. This aligns with our strategic goals of sustainable, cost-effective fish production and advancing precision farming. Refining biofilter performance will lower water exchange requirements, reduce nutrient levels in discharge water, decrease energy consumption, and minimize environmental impact, in accordance with standards such as the EU's Green Deal. This project enables AKVA Group to not only meet the demands of professional customers and regulatory bodies, but also strengthens our position as leaders in developing innovative, process-oriented solutions in aquaculture technology.
