The geotechnical profession depends entirely on the quality and quantity of data from site investigations to be able to deliver safe designs. In situ and laboratory geo-data are NGI's "bread & butter" and essential to it meeting is societal responsibility. The same is true for geo-consultants. Data produced in situ (onshore, offshore, geotechnical data, contamination data, geophysical data and laboratory data) are part of ensuring a foundation design.Compared to today's practice, the data need to be stored and managed, structured and enriched with proper metadata (e.g. project, location, method) and secured. The data must be made available for easy use and reuse and need to be shared by humans and computer codes. The current practice for the data accumulated is fragmented and inefficient. There is a need for an online method/system to find, share, calculate and utilize geo-data, as well as identify low data quality. The FIELD MANAGER project solves this systemic problem with a new platform providing streamlined activities, consistently interpreted data, higher data quality and enhanced collaboration among field personnel, designer, clients and consultants, and a digital platform for ground investigations collecting data from site investigations and providing an overview of ground conditions for all geotechnical projects in Norway. The project has four work packages: (1) Geotechnical on land investigations, in situ; (2) Geotechnicalon offshore investigations and laboratory investigations (onshore and offshore); (3) Cross-disciplinary soil-rock-geological, geophysical and environmental investigations; and (4) Advanced data analysis – statistical and machine learning modelling. The project has the ambitious goal that the new online solution will become the common data handling for most geotechnical actors in Norway.
