Electrification is essential for reducing emissions and de-carbonizing our society, and batteries play an important role in this transition. The Norwegian government outlined the importance of battery technology development and production by launching a separate battery strategy June 2022. In EU, the target is a full European battery value chain that can supply the European market with batteries for electrification. To achieve this, EU is currently announcing different funding programs encouraging for development and cooperation within the field. Today, most batteries are produced in Asia and is dominated by batteries such as lithium-ion batteries (LiB) that are not suitable for applications that require high power since fast charging/discharging reduce the lifetime of LiB. Also, there are increasing concerns with the environmental cost of battery production chains, particularly extraction of cobalt and nickel. Beyonder is developing sustainable, safe, high power batteries with high cycle life and fast charge/discharge rate applicable for industrial application that require high power and/or fast charging such as energy storage, grid balancing, peak shawing, Uninterrupted Power Supply, forklifts, and heavy duty vehicles. High cycle life is possible applying Beyonder's novel pre-lithiated process. Beyonder's strategy is to develop and produce sustainable batteries and contribute to electrification of the transport sector. The main goal of this project is to 1) Freeze Gen 1 cell design for commercial launch, 2) Validate Gen 2 cells (pre-lithiated cell) in accordance with specifications, and 3) Validate that the pre-lithiation process can be up-scaled with respect to performance, safety, production efficiency, and costs.
