Development of a novel radioligand therapy for treatment of metastatic prostate cancer

Metastatic castration resistant prostate cancer (mCRPC) is a life-threatening disease associated with debilitating clinical symptoms. Patients failing standard approved treatments have usually a short life expectancy and very few treatment options. ARTBIO has developed a novel treatment for mCRPC (called AB001) based on the alpha emitter 212Pb coupled to a small molecule that targets prostate-specific membrane antigen (PSMA), an abundantly expressed protein in prostate cancer cells. Preclinical studies indicate AB001 achieves good tumour targeting in vitro and in vivo with potent antitumor activity. ARTBIO wish to proceed with clinical development of AB001 to help bring this drug to mCRPC patients for whom it could provide an effective treatment. In this project ARTBIO will carry out further development of AB001 via early stage clinical development (Phase 0) in order to prepare the product for later stage clinical development. The project also includes optimization of the manufacturing process for the drug, compliant with regulatory requirements (GMP), and further optimisation of a method of 212Pb production that will enable ARTBIO to produce greater quantities of pure 212Pb allowing treatment of a larger number of patients.
