Low emission waste wood composite boards

The goal of this project is to develop new low-emission adhesive systems for producing composite boards from non-traditional wood materials, such as waste material from the wood processing industry and wood in municipal solid waste. Up cycling these waste streams will improve the carbon footprint of the composite boards and sequester the carbon in the wood waste throughout the life of the board. However, these alternative wood materials present challenges for the adhesive due to the variability and lower quality of the recycled/waste wood material. New adhesives need to be developed to meet these challenges without sacrificing the performance of the final composite board product. Furthermore, these adhesives need to be designed to meet the strict environmental and indoor air quality regulations of the future. This project will develop such adhesives and facilitate the production of more sustainable and environmentally friendly waste wood based composite boards.
