Wet insulation of pipelines are essential to maintain a reliable and high production rate of oil and gas through the lifetime of the oil/gas field. Shawcor is the leading supplier of such wet insulation systems. Shawcor see increased competition to wet insulation systems from pipe in pipe solutions. Styrenic insulation products have the potential to keep wet insulation as a desired insulation option for pipelines. There are many benefits with styrenic insulation systems compared to conventional coating systems, but it also has some limitations especially with regards to operating temperature. This project, expanding the capabilities of styrenic insulation, is essential to keep wet insulation as an attractive solution for future projects where cost reduction is a high focus. This project will cover improvements to the existing styrenic systems. Firstly, a new super-insulating option will significantly reduce coating cost for projects at shallow waters (< 350m water depth). Secondly, an increased temperature capability is essential to keep up to speed with potential upcoming projects where we see a general increase in the oil temperature. Thirdly, there is an increased focus on seabed stability requirements for the pipeline. This can conventionally be overcome by rock dumping or adding other physical restraints to the pipe at the seabed. The project goal of making the pipe insulation heavier would significantly reduce the cost for developing a field where this is a requirement.
