Characterization and use of novel lignosulfonates

Borregaard is one of the top 3 global producers of specialty cellulose, which is used for cellulose acetate and cellulose ethers (applications such as filters, plastics, textiles, thickeners, etc). Borregaard also produces microfibrillated cellulose (world's first commercial producer), lignin-based performance chemicals (the world's leading producer with 40% of global market), vanillin (the only producer of wood-based vanillin) and bioethanol. The global head office, R&D laboratories and largest production facility are based in Sarpsborg, Norway. The site is considered to be the world's most advanced biorefinery and produces all of the mentioned products from Norway Spruce. Borregaard's competitive edge relies on the development of novel technologies that converts wood into high value-added biochemicals. This requires Borregaard to maintain a strong R&D department with over 70 scientists. LignoExplore is a research project that dives into the physico-chemical fundaments behind our lignin products associated to their ability to disperse colloidal systems. The project also investigates the effectiveness of our newest lignosulfonate products and the reasons why they are a preferred solution to traditional petrochemical alternatives. LignoExplore is done in collaboration with NTNU which provides cutting edge scientific instrumentation and leading expertise.
