Infrastructure networks such as power lines, pipelines, railways, and roadways spread for thousands of kilometers across countries and pass through forests and various terrain on their way to transport energy and other necessities to our homes. During this long journey, infrastructure lines interact with vegetation on many occasions. Vegetation encroachment into infrastructure lines’ right-of-way creates huge sociotechnical damages each year by causing outages in power systems, roadway/railroad closures, and train delays that put millions of people in darkness and isolation with billions of NOK in economic damage. For example, in Norway 86% of power outages are caused by trees branches touching the power lines or fallen trees cutting overhead power lines per Statnett’s annual report. The GridEyeS project for Satellite-based Vegetation Modeling is a response to the need for increasing situational awareness on vegetation condition near power lines by unleashing artificial intelligence (AI) potential over rapidly growing satellite data. The combination of of situational awareness and weather risks will allow for increased uptime and and reduced costs for electric utility companies. GridEyes is a collaboration between StormGeo and HVL bridging the industrial dimension towards research.
