There is an increasing industry expectation that products cater for Industry 4.0 and IIoT principles. Whereas Industry 3.0 of the 20th Century introduced digital tools and automation systems largely operated by humans, Industry 4.0 denotes the currently ongoing shift towards holistic machine integration. With all system components digitally connected, machines are enabled to assist throughout the full system lifecycle from design to operation. One way of achieving such integration is by the use of the Digital Twin (DT) with its concept of a central data hub. The DT is a real-time virtual representation of a real machine or service with all its components integrated, and it enables engineering, simulation, integration, testing, monitoring and maintenance in one single digital environment with less need for expensive and time-demanding prototyping. Cloud services are designed to provide easy, affordable access to applications and resources, without the need for internal infrastructure or hardware. With its DT implemented in the Cloud, an industrial system is said to be part of the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT). Nebb has successful commercial applications of Variable Speed Drives (VSDs), especially for use subsea in the O&G industry. As a responsible company to preserve competitiveness, developing an IIoT-connected DT for our VSDs is important. Our development approach is a result of the cumulative experience of our company in the development of VSDs and software products. Computer programming and software development are rapidly growing within Nebb. This knowledge forms a solid base for our current VSDs to be upscaled onto an IIoT-connected DT. The DT will make our VSD more attractive to our clients. The company will get a digital representation of the physical product that is easier to demonstrate with simulation ability according to client demands.
