Development of technologies for manganese alloys with significant CO2 emission reduction

Manganese is an indispensable addition element to iron in the production of steel. It de-oxidizes, binds sulfur and contributes to the strength of the steel. Steel is an essential input factor to transform vital sectors like energy production and transport, thus making possible the needed green shift to mitigate anthropogenic negative impacts, primarily the climate crisis. Steel is 100% recyclable and is today 80% recycled in Europe. The most innovative steel producers are developing so called green steel, meaning steel whose production has a minimum impact on the planet in particular with minimal or no fossil CO2 emissions. Eramet is developing a new line of manganese alloys, with reduction of up to 40% of CO2 emissions. The Skattefunn project will allow the needed developments. Green manganese alloys will meet the needs of the most responsible and innovative steel producers, making their own green steel ambitions possible. A holistic approach exploiting innovation for key technical levers within climate will be taken. Ultimately, our Research and Development effort targets a net-zero CO2 footprint, by allowing complementary actions: reduce carbon consumption in the existing process, replace fossil carbon as coke and coal currently used in the furnaces by biocarbon, capture CO2 from off-gases with Carbon Capture and Storage or Usage (CCUS). In addition, hydrogen usage will be investigated, paving the way for carbon-free manganese production processes.
