Digitalization in the operation, monitoring and control of large-scale biogas plants (“DIGI”)

Biokraft is the owner and operator of the worlds largest plant producing liquefied biogas (LBG, also know as BioLNG) located at Skogn in Trøndelag. The Skogn plant started operations in the summer of 2018 and has since planned two production plant increases which will conclude in 2024, increasing the total production capacity to 25 Nm3 per year. Expansion of the plant is supported by the strong market demand in Europe for carbon neutral liquid transport fuels for heavy vehicles. The BioLNG is a renewable fuel, contributing to a greener future for the transport sector. The main project idea is to improve operational efficiencies, by developing and installing emerging new sensor technologies not previously seen in the biogas sector at this scale, real time monitoring, data collection, new analysis methods and advanced computer models will enable precise control of large biogas reactors. The project focuses on establishing infrastructure which will serve as basis for process plant availability of more than 95%. Compared to the current state of the art availability for biogas plants at 90%, this target represents a 40% reduction in plant down-time. A related subgoal is to document the feasibility of a 5% increase in biogas production rate compared to the design basis for the Biokraft plant at Skogn.
