Intelligent Lubricant delivery systems for extreme railway working conditions

The number of train passengers in Norway is steadily increasing, for instance it has increased by 50% since 2004 and by 3.4% in 2019 up to 80 million. These figures are also similar for underground and light rail. ELBA wants to be in the forefront of the new transition towards more environmentally acceptable systems and processes in the Norwegian railway sector. Therefore, ELBA has led a process that ended up by preparing a new R&D proposal together with SINTEF and NTNU for producing the new generation of lubricating systems that will contribute to a better friction management of the wheel-rail system. By doing so it is expected not only a longer lifetime of the wheels and rails and decrease the energy consumption and reduce the maintenance, repair and overhaul but also a better air quality in the residential areas by minimizing the release of metallic particles into the air but also minimising the amount of lubricant ending up in the nature.
