We aim to develop and commercialize novel, flexible, and home-compostable films based on seaweed extracts. The materials can replace conventional single-use plastic films in food-contact applications. Our solution will contribute to reducing the use of non- or hardly recyclable plastic materials for single-use food packaging, reducing 2 tonnes (t) of CO2 emissions per year per each t of PE and PP replaced by our material. This project is focusing on the upscaling of the process of fabrication of seaweed based films and in enhancing the thermal properties of the developed materials. We aim to initiate pre-sales of a premium product to the food industry right after this project and reach full commercial scale within 20 months after the project.
