Offentlig prosjektsammendrag
The transition into automation has been going on for nearly two decades. It started with the most mundane and repeatable tasks, tasks that had clear scenarios and it increasingly tackled more complicated processes. Now, for the first time, it is possible to imagine a machine that's able to perform humans' most elaborate function - creating art. This revolution has only just started, and there’s yet to be an established leader in the field, neither has a dominant design emerged. Sloyd is one of a few companies with the ambition to conquer this new peek in technology evolution. Sloyd’s mission is to automate and simplify the creation of 3D models in the creative industries. Digital 3D-modeling is a big part of video games, movies, TV, and graphic design. For the past 20 years the graphical detail has increased greatly, increasing production costs ten times on average - yet customer pricing has remained mostly the same. With Sloyd the cost of producing creative 3D can be greatly reduced. The user edits 3D models just by entering text and changing simple sliders. Behind the scenes, the Sloyd engine generates the models on the fly - creating unique and customizable models. Then the user can edit all these objects at once. A procedural approach has been implemented in other 3D tools: city, vegetation and 'environment' generators. The commonality among all these generators is that a handful of components are repeated many times with some probability applied to create a natural looking outcome. However, no one has tried creating a large variety of different objects that are not made of just a handful of components. What are the patterns that make an object sci-fi? What’s the geometry of cartoonish objects? And, how to procedurally add decorative elements? These are the types of questions we will research. Some of which we will solve in the course of the project and for the others we will gain new knowledge in procedural generation to be able to tackle it later on.
