Transforming smartphones into a compact professional camera system

Fjorden is an Oslo-based startup with the vision to create the world’s best smartphone camera experience, combining photographic components that attaches to the smartphone and a camera app. Our first product, Fjorden Grip, is an ergonomic, professional camera grip that is small enough to fit in your pocket when attached to your smartphone. The Grip provides physical dials and buttons which let you quickly access and change all important camera settings with a single hand, replicating the experience of using a traditional camera. The iOS Fjorden Camera App is a professional, intuitive camera app for fast, one-handed shooting. We are now working on simplifying/optimizing the prototype design, for the mass manufacturing to become possible and cost-effective, and for the device to become more durable and provide better haptics. This development is the starting point for this project, which will conclude the development of the Fjorden Grip. Furthermore, Fjorden will develop multiple photographic components, to create a pocketable smartphone camera system that mimics the functionality and performance of traditional cameras, combining hardware tools and computational photography. Besides the development of the components, Fjorden will develop solutions for automatic detection and interaction with the camera app, which will be key to create a seamless and professional user experience. As such, Fjorden will be the first hardware/software solution that can replace the need for a traditional camera, and even surpass the performance of a professional mirrorless/DSLR camera.
