Molofeed AS is a Norwegian company dedicated to the development and production of larval feed for the aquaculture industry. Molofeed’s mission is to deliver a bottom-up contribution across all levels of the value chain of the global aquaculture industry. This project is dedicated to the development of two new liquid microencapsulated feed products: 1) VæskePro – a liquid microencapsulated feed delivering complete nutrition to fish and shrimp larvae and post-larvae, and 2) Åberike – a liquid enrichment diet. Both products will be developed to efficiently replace and reduce the use of Artemia, which is a scarce natural resource that has the potential to cap the growth in the global aquaculture industry. Molofeed’s proprietary microencapsulation technology allows for inclusion of water soluble and heat sensitive ingredients such as probiotics, prebiotics, enzymes, immunostimulants, while preventing excessive leaching of nutrients. However, the recovery of these heat-sensitive ingredients is impacted by the high temperatures used to dry the feed in the current production process. The research and development planned for this project includes 1) development of a pilot production process; 2) definition of formulations; and 3) in vivo trials. The project is expected to generate new knowledge and a practical solution, aiming to optimize the results of the aquaculture industry, while minimizing the use of Artemia.
