Offentlig prosjektsammendrag
The main goal of the project is to develop a new four stroke engine and adjacent systems for this engine to run on Ammonia. The main goal of the project is to develop a new four stroke engine and adjacent systems for this engine to run on Ammonia. The innovative technology development of the project is to utilize ammonia as the main energy carrier, by optimization of the combustion process and testing different fuel mixes to get maximum efficiency and performance. The project aims to result in an engine with zero or low greenhouse gas emissions that can be used for propulsion in ships or as a power generator. Wärtsilä engine to be full-scale tested on ammonia at Stord: The Katapult centre at Stord will carry out a full-scale test of an internal combustion engine that utilises ammonia as fuel. Norway can gain a technological advantage over ammonia engines for ships and rigs. When a successful engine test, can be installed on board a shuttel tanker or a Repsol platform and put into use in two to three years. The engine in question is a medium-speed four-stroke engine from Wärtsilä. Infrastructure and combustion engine: Wärtsilä has, together with Nordic industry partners, studied ammonia as a future carbon-free fuel through the ZEEDS initiative, which describes a clean fuel production and distribution infrastructure for emission-free fuel for shipping. Zero CO2: If ammonia can be produced without CO2 emissions, it will be an important step towards making shipping emission-free. Ammonia is much easier to handle in liquid form for large, sea-going vessels (deep sea), and is already being handled in a large scale in connection with the production of nitrogen fertilizers. The Stord Katapult: Sustainable Energy part of The Norwegian Catapult Center covers various levels services, from the development and testing of prototypes in laboratory environments to finished products that need testing in operational environment on land, on ships and in the ocean space.
