Poseidon Simulation AS offers Maritime education products and services, including in-house products and sales of third-party products. The company is one of the few vendors globally that provides Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS) simulators. GMDSS-simulators are used to train and educate users who want to obtain GMDSS/GOC (general operators certificate) and GMDSS/ROC (Restricted Operators Certificate). Simulators for training in GMDSS are required to follow internationally anchored standards for maritime simulator-based training. The standards have been prepared by the International Maritime Organization (IMO). Simulator-based training is carried out at approved schools and education centres. Completed training provides students with a certificate necessary to perform work on ships and vessels operating in international waters. By 2022, there will be new regulatory requirements for maritime simulator training from the IMO. The new regulatory requirements come partly due to the phasing in of a new international satellite system, Iridium, which will be used for GMDSS. This satellite system has different functionality than the current satellite system, in that it orbits the earth at a low altitude, opposed to existing satellite systems which are geo-stationed. The Iridium satellite system also provides global coverage for GMDSS services, whereas previous systems had limited reach. The new requirements from the IMO decide that all educational institutions must offer to teach GMDSS in a way that operates with this new satellite system. In this project, the company will implement the new Iridium LT-3100S instrument in the GMDSS simulator. This addition will be the first implementation of the new Iridium satellite system in the GMDSS training market.
