Xylobond: multifunctional binding additives from wood

In Project Xylobond, Borregaard will develop new wood-based chemical binding additives that will replace current petrochemical-based technology to ensure better utilization of raw material and waste streams in various industries including metallurgy, batteries and animal feed. Wood consists of 45% cellulose, 30% lignin and 25% sugar. Lignin is the natural binder that gives the plant strength and robustness, and it is lignin that is used as the raw material for the chemical binding additives developed in this research project. The funding from the Skattefunn represents a major risk relief for Borregaard and contributes to more sustainable innovation and development in different industries of importance to the Norwegian economy.
