The process of producing packaging products of corrugated cardboard is an integrated value chain consisting of graphics design, packaging design and definition of cut lines and fold lines, printing process, cutting and folding process, and post processing like gluing and assembly of multiple pieces. Demands from our industry customers include a flexibility in cardboard thickness from 1 mm to 16 mm, high number of sheets per hour, high demand for equipment uptime, and integration with auxiliary equipment for automatic loading and unloading of sheets to the cutting table. The printing process for packaging products has become extremely efficient by the introduction of fast digital single pass printers. This high throughput in the printing process makes the cutting and folding process a bottleneck in the production process. Only marginal increments in throughput efficiency of cutting and folding has been achieved compared to the printing process over the last decade. This leaves the corrugated production segment screaming for higher throughput in the cutting and folding process step. In the “Zemcotoo” project, we aim for a completely new range of modular digital cutting tables for the corrugated cardboard production segment. The goal is to increase throughput speed with 160 – 300 % compared to existing state-of-the-art in the industry.
