Offentlig prosjektsammendrag
The ongoing electrification of society drives the development of new battery materials forward. Titania (TiO2) is a promising anode material which decreases the charging time, increases the lifetime and improves the safety and temperature tolerance of Li-ion batteries (LIB). The improved properties make the anode material ideal for LIB applications like energy storage, hybrid and large vehicles, ferries, defence and medicine. A challenge when using titania in batteries is the relatively low capacity as compared to the standard solution, graphite anodes. To enhance the capacity, the material can be combined with other materials, like carbon nanofibers (CNF). TioTech is developing titania-based anode materials for LIB. Bergen Carbon Solutions produces CNF from CO2 by a novel, green technology. In this project, which we call "The Black and White Project" the two Bergen-based companies collaborate to develop a TiO2-CNF nanocomposite. A successfully developed material with high anode capacity is attractive for the market of fast-charging, long-lasting Li-ion batteries. The innovative material will contribute to driving the electrification, and the green shift, forward.
