The vision of the InSPIRE project is to build knowledge and confidence in a new energy solution that brings together two types of renewable power, wave and wind, on a single offshore platform. Several important benefits can be realised by combining energy sources in this way. Firstly, it provides a more stable and less variable power output compared with a single renewable power source alone. Additionally, it enables more power to be generated in a given location by taking advantage of both wave and wind resources at the same site. InSPIRE takes this concept a step further by combining the two power sources in an integrated structure, with fully shared infrastructure. This allows Technip Norge AS to secure cost efficiencies that act to bring down the price of power generated by the platform. Ultimately, the aim of InSPIRE is to develop this new technology to the point where it can provide electricity that is price competitive with fossil fuel-based power sources. Technip Norge AS will purchase R&D services from six partners spanning five countries, as part of an interdisciplinary approach to the integration of two distinct power sources and the additional complexity this raises. These partners include large multinationals, technology providers, a green energy developer and an engineering-focused academic institution.
