Offentlig prosjektsammendrag

Ice loads on structures can arise from a wide range of mechanisms. These are denoted ice actions, which in turn are associated with so called ice-action effects e.g. force distribution, vibrations, or structural damage, to mention but a few. The goal of this project is to create an integrated tool-chain for estimation of these ice-action effects and their corresponding return periods (the inverse probability of a certain effect to occur on a yearly basis). Based on a statistical description of the environmental conditions, the tool-chain should be able to generate synthetic, long time series from the relevant ice parameters creating an associated time series of ice action. The occurrence and severity of the subsequent (action) effects, e.g. global mooring load, ice-induced vibrations, structural fatigue and hull failure can be estimated in terms of return periods and associated to a corresponding environmental state. With these environmental conditions as a base, high fidelity time domain simulations for the selected sets will then provide statistics of the structural response to the corresponding ice-desing conditions. The increased accuracy in determining the loads and the structural response will help reduce conservatism of the design and thus the associated CAPEX. Reduced CAPEX has lately become an important focus area in the energy industry, which is moving from fossil to renewables. The renewable energy industry still needs a significant decrease of construction cost, in order to promote a sustainable level of profitability. This is even more true in the case of arctic projects, due to the advanced technical solutions necessary to tackle the harsher environment.
