Red mark syndrome (RMS) is an infectious skin disease of salmonids, in particular rainbow trout. The disease is increasing in prevalence within rainbow trout aquaculture in Europe. Currently RMS affects approximately one third of Danish freshwater farms, and when ranking disease importance, European farmers rate RMS one the key challenges affecting their business today. Whilst it is harmful to trout, the disease does not affect the nutritional value of the final fish product nor can be humans be affected. One striking clinical feature of the disease can be large diffuse lesions of the surface of the skin. These lesions often make it difficult for a farmer to sell their fish. The inability to sell their fish often requires operational changes in farm management further reducing the farms profitability. Currently, only chemotherapeutic strategies have been found to be effective against the disease. The aim of the project is to develop a health feed that can improve the fish’s robustness and reduce the presence of skin lesions. The benefits of a feed product are that a farms does not have to change their management practices and can realize a great sales price for their stock at harvest.
