CI/CD practices automate the compilation, building, and testing of software. Despite CI and CD being widely used processes in software engineering, there are barriers to their uptake and optimised use. Without demonstrated strategies to overcome these barriers, developers make avoidable errors leading to lower quality software, tool builders invest in the wrong direction leading to ineffective tooling, and researchers miss opportunities for improving the processes. This is a novel project that will improve software development processes. We aim to improve the efficiency of software development processes by 20%, equalling 4,78 million full-time employees globally. We are aware this is a highly ambitious goal, however we believe there are significant efficiency gains to be made in software development processes. This project requires a large amount of data collection, and high potential but also high risk activity in investigating and building automation functionalities for developers to adopt containerised workflows, which would not be explored without external funding. We will develop novel strategies to assist software development teams in both adopting and optimising continuous integration (CI) and continuous delivery (CD) workflows by using a modern approach with container technologies. These new strategies will be used within Kubed, a commercial CI/CD SaaS tool, and through DevOps consulting services provided by project partners.
