After participating in a Joint Industry Project since 2013, Total can now develop oil and gas fields on the seabed at 3,000 meters water depth, hundreds of kilometers from shore, with renewable power. Not only does this genuine technical achievement open unexplored areas, it will also offer CAPEX savings, help deliver additional reserves and reduce environmental footprint. Electrification of the subsea production system is part of a global CO2 reduction program within the industry. Together with subsea processing, digitalization and automation we see the potential to minimize topside facilities to normally unmanned FPSO’s/platforms (more than 50% size reduction) or remove them entirely with Subsea to Beach architectures. This will realize a significant carbon footprint reduction during both the development and the operational life cycles. The objective of this project is to develop the technology components necessary to realize an economically viable means to produce offshore reserves in an environmentally responsible manner. To achieve this Total has embarked on a joint industry initiative to work together with the main industry operators and product suppliers. Identifying and developing the key technology needs for an all-electric system and ensuring industry readiness in as short a timeframe as possible.
