Offentlig prosjektsammendrag

Satellite communications, be it television, telephony or internet connectivity, is an important technological area, and Norway has a long and proud tradition in this industry. VSATs – very small aperture terminals – are modems connected to small satellite antennas with typically less than one meter diameter. This is usually either a household satellite dish or a moveable antenna on a ship. Every satellite has a certain available bandwidth, which is split up to provide multiple services simultaneously. This way, a single satellite can transmit different television broadcasts, multiple internet-over-satellite services, and other content. Government regulators are responsible for monitoring and assuring the lawful usage of radio frequencies by licensed operators, as the electromagnetic spectrum is a public good in heavy demand. They have to scan the EM spectrum, detect carrier waves transmitted by each satellite, and determine the type and content of each carrier wave. Kratos, and its Fornebu-based R&D center Kratos Norway, have a broad product portfolio to support these activities. Kratos Norway in particular, is the market leader in the field of detecting and monitoring VSAT networks. This project focuses on research and prototyping efforts to extend our flagship products and remain the leading vendor of VSAT network monitoring. New features built around high performance computing will enable government regulators to more accurately monitor satellite activities, while new geospatial data analysis tools will enable satellite operators to optimize their signal footprints. Lower satellite launch costs driven by new players such as SpaceX, smallsat architectures employed in a wide range of sectors and innovative new space ventures are all poised to provide a major boost to the satellite communications market. For Kratos Norway, this project will provide a strength basis for future growth and competitiveness in a strong international market.
