Natural gas is by far the cleanest fossil fuel, reducing CO2 emissions by 25%, NOx-emissions by 85% and eliminating SOx and particle emissions by 99% as compared to oil, and has even more impact if replacing coal. Natural gas will be one of the most important energy sources for the short to medium term to bridge the gap between today’s high-carbon powered world and the long-term renewable-energy future. However, there are challenges with development of LNG infrastructure. The main bottleneck is the infrastructure costs of the transfer system between LNG carriers and onshore terminals. The current solution for this is building quays or jetties which are time consuming, costly and does not scale well with the size of the terminal. To overcome this barrier to LNG deployment and to reduce cost significantly, Connect LNG has developed the jettyless Universal Transfer System (UTS®). After successfully delivering the first commercial UTS transfer System in 2017, Connect LNG has established itself as a solid player in the LNG industry, proving that jettyless transfer of LNG is even more advantageous than first thought. During the FlexMarIn project supported by the Norwegian Research Council, Connect LNG and Norwegian world renowned research partner SINTEF will conduct groundbreaking research combining the fields of advanced process technology and hydrodynamics in order to take the UTS technology to the next level, enabling roll-out of the UTS on an unprecedented scale, thus enabling distribution of cleaner energy to areas not possible today.
