Improving detection of faecal calprotectin

Calprotectin is a calcium- and zinc-binding protein of the S-100 family. It is mainly found within white blood cells called neutrophils. The presence of calprotectin in faeces is a result of neutrophil migration into the gastrointestinal tissue due to an inflammatory process. As the concentration of calprotectin correlates well with intestinal inflammation, it can be used as a biomarker in gastrointestinal disorders. Faecal calprotectin is valuable for differentiating between inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). In this project, we will produce novel reagents for detecting faecal calprotectin by researching the calprotectin antigen and antibodies against it.
