Impact of dietary faba bean inclusions on performance of Atl. salmon

Faba beans contain relatively high digestible protein but also high amounts of good starch quality required to create stable pellets during the production process. When Faba beans are added to a salmon feed the outer hull is usually removed. Main reason for not adding whole beans is the significant proportion of the anti-nutrient factors (ANF) present in Faba beans which is removed in the process of de-hulling (Vidal-Valverde et al., 1998). However, literature but also own results indicate that whole Faba beans have a similar protein digestibility as dehulled beans. The objective of the study is therefore to investigate whether it is still necessary to dehull Faba beans before using them for Atlantic salmon nutrition.
