Development of X-ray based flow measurement system in collaboration with Equinor

REX-CELL(TM) I-Series is a project launched to further enhance the foundation of the multiphase technology in Norway, branded as the largest invention of Norway since 1982 (Aftenposten 2012). Flow assurance is the core of offshore field asset, ensuring reliable transport of oil and gas in a long distance subsea pipeline. Despite the advance in modelling technologies, there are still large uncertainties present in the simulator which bring troubles to oil companies with respect to design and operation. In the past, measuring flow conditions in the pipeline and/or on the platform relies solely on the isotopic radiation instrument, made of gamma-source. REX-CELL(TM) I-Series aims to overcome the hurdle invoked by the gamma source, which gives both unreliable measurements and harm to environment. The I-Series, built upon the state-of-the-art X-ray technology, not only gives better accuracy – seen the unseen, but also protects us from overcrowded deployment of gamma sources. The project which has retrieved supports from Innovation Norway will carry out more profound studies and tackle more engineering challenges to elevate further the performance of the system. It is expected that the close involvement and engagement of Equinor in supporting the development of this technology will promote further the recognition of our products in the future.
