Sea lice are responsible for at least NOKbn 15 in yearly costs and lost income for the Norwegian salmon aquaculture industry alone. The market for solutions has been estimated to NOKbn 5. Fish farmers are asking for more and better data to run large-scale operations and abolish current manual sea lice monitoring practices. New solutions are required to improve fish welfare, reduce loss of biomass, improve decision support related to optimal timing of slaughtering and treatment, and realize the economic potential of the aquaculture industry. Fishency is developing the SmartFunnel 360, a system comprising software, algorithms and an underwater hardware structure for real-time 360 degrees visual monitoring of fish in open sea aquaculture cages. The ability to control the environment and monitor 100% of the fish are significant differentiators and unique to the market. Having completed the first R&D cycle, the present project is set to optimize designs and develop machine vision algorithms and software interfaces for detection and classification of sea lice. Fish farm operator companies provide access to facilities. Additional applications related to fish health parameters will also be explored. The SmartFunnel 360 - Ultimate Fish Health Monitoring Platform project - will be managed as a separate R&D activity with clear deliverables and is at the core of Fishency' strategy and activity plan.
