MIRIS AS are a real estate development company based in Oslo, who focus primarily on the development of energy efficient real estate and state of the art data centres. Project Svart is an ambitious R&D project undertaken by MIRIS, which seeks to design and construct the worlds first energy-positive Powerhouse standard hotel. The energy-positive concept ensures that renewable energy generated by onsite renewable assets outweighs energy emitted and consumed by the building from conception to decommissioning to ensure a truly carbon neutral development. The hotel will be located in the Svartisen Glacier Region on the edge of the Arctic Circle, and it aims to consume 85% less energy per annum than other modern hotel designs. MIRIS will minimise any impact on the precious surrounding environment by using low energy materials and environmentally friendly construction techniques. Energy generated on site will primarily come from solar panels mounted onto the specially designed roof, and from nearby geothermal heat sources. An additional goal for this project is to use the excess energy generated by the hotel to power the development of a local, self-sustaining community.
