Low-cost dual interface biometric smartcard system

IDEX develops a fingerprint sensor system solution for embedding in smart cards that are compliant to the ISO card standards, and can be used for financial and/or ID purposes. In 2016, in the Touch sensor project, an ISO compliant sensor was developed for contact-based smart cards. Contact cards are powered by direct connection when inserted into the POS terminal. In 2017-2018, in the Contactless card project, a battery-free contactless card architecture and low power sensor technology was developed to enable the first dual interface biometric smartcard. There are no fully integrated Biometric Module solutions currently available on the market. The current prototype and trial/test contactless biometric cards that have been produced, have several discrete devices on the card, and these devices are connected. The Orion Orion module project aims to develop new low cost architectures and a single multi-chip-module embedding and integrating several of these now separate devices.
