Ocean Farm 1 - the world's first offshore fish farm – aspires to address central issues related to sustainable growth in the aquaculture industry. Ocean Farm 1 is built as a full-scale pilot and designed to test out both biological and technological aspects of offshore fish farming. Ocean Farm 1 is a construction with the same basic characteristics as submersible offshore installations, which simultaneously safeguards the biological needs of the salmon. Aiming to reduce environmental footprints, improve fish welfare and answer acreage challenges, the learning and new solutions from the Ocean Farm 1 project could represent a new era in sustainable seafood production – and is potentially adaptable worldwide. Ocean Farm faces challenges with regards to cleaning the submerged part of the installation. Ocean Farm's need is to avoid manual cleaning as much as possible and to have a “system” in place that regularly cleans the structure while it is still submerged. If Ocean Farm can keep the installation clean through regular/continuous underwater cleaning, the downtime between removal of fish for slaughter and placing of new smolt will be considerably reduced, resulting in significant economic benefits. A considerable part of the installation that requires regular cleaning, is round or curved with some areas relatively difficult to reach. There are no “easy to use” solutions on the market that support underwater cleaning of this type of construction.
