Safe Cesarean Section through simulation

Every year, there are 2.7 million neonatal deaths, 300,000 maternal deaths, and 2.6 million stillbirths, the majority of which occur in low-resource settings and during the day of birth. Many of these deaths could be averted if attended by equipped, competent and confident health care providers. Cesarean section is one of the interventions that are known to prevent death and morbidity when women experience complications in childbirth. Timely cesarean sections can prevent 100,000 maternal deaths every year and reduce newborn deaths substantially too. Globally, there are currently two grave concerns. On one side, there is a massive underserved population where C-section is not available. WHO see a c-section rate around 10-15% as a natural proportion based on clinical indications. There is a massive need to train surgical teams to provide access for mothers and newborns. We will develop a reusable and comprehensive c-section simulator to support skill training and team training, covering the incision with realistic body layers, removal of baby as well as suturing and repair. The simulator will be a tool to introduce procedural skills for residents in training, support updates to competencies for surgical personell, a tool to discuss cases in situations of mentorship, as well as support team training of surgical teams to increase quality of performance. The simulator will be an important tool for implementation of the WHO safe surgery checklist.
