Innovative wound healing technology based on bioactive marine ingredients

Regenics has developed bioactives originating from fish roe. A crude extract is sold as an ingredient and integrated in finished products for cosmetic purposes. All R&D is invested in developing products for wound care. Chronic and hard-to-heal wounds are a major health problem worldwide. Present treatment is mainly based on cleaning and removal of dead tissue (debridement) as needed for the wound to heal, treat any infection and cover and protect the wound from external factors. The innovation in the area has been low and the medical and societal need for new cost-effective treatment alternatives is high. The market is recognized by a few dominating global wound healing companies. It would be almost impossible for a small SME as Regenics to launch new treatment alternative for wound care without a partnership with one of the global players. In this Skattefunn project, Regenics will collaborate with one of these companies, and the direction of the research will largely be guided by this target customer. Regenics will develop pilot formulations of the two following products for wound healing to address the need for new treatment alternatives for debridement and reepithelialization. The bio-actives in both are originating from salmonid roe. The preferred formulations will enter clinical trials as required by regulatory agencies: * A product incorporating genetically engineered salmonid enzyme (LCE1) for debridement of wounds. This device will remove dead or necrotic tissue in wounds to accelerate the healing process. * A product incorporating a bioactive from salmon roe (HTX) for reepithelialization of chronic wounds. Further, the potential to improve the technology for 3D printing of human tissue through adding HTX in the bio-ink will be explored. Regenics is partially funded by national public funding, including Skattefunn, and funding through EU programs. The main funding comes from existing and new investors as well as revenues from sales of cosmetic products.
