Nutritional support against parasites in fish and shrimp

Parasites cause significant economic losses to the global aquaculture farming industry. Parasites are not limited to salmonids, they are found in all fish species and in shrimp. Parasites are found in both farmed and wild creatures. Parasites cause direct losses to the industry in terms of mortalities, downgrading at harvest and treatment costs. Feed intake and resultant growth rates may be reduced. Further, the implications to animal welfare should not be underestimated. This project aims to improve already existing commercial anti parasitic diets, and to develop and create new diets in the fight against parasites. A combination of in vitro, bench top experimental models and in vivo, live fish or shrimp challenge trials will be developed and used to assist in the development of advance anti parasitic diets.
