Installation of tieback anchors and steel bored piles in clay

A recurring problem in building and construction is large settlement and other damage (like cracks in building walls or cellars) to neighbouring buildings due to foundation works in soft to medium soft clays. A lot of urban Norway is seated on soft to medium soft clay. The research will look into the installation of tieback anchors and steel bored piles. Both are commonly used in Norway as foundation solutions. Drilling and other methods for such installations are very complex (soil response wise) and cause disturbances in the soil. It is proposed in this Skattefunn project to investigate the process of drilling/installing foundation elements in soft to medium soft clays, to provide an improved understanding of the installation effects of drilling and recommend new methods, techniques and procedures to prevent damages due to installation. In particular, the change in pore pressure and groundwater level, disturbance and reconsolidation of the clay and potential loss of soil volume due to installation will be quantified. The research will develop a new method to predict settlement due to the installation of anchors and piles and make recommendation on how to best install anchors and steel core piles in soft to medium soft clays. The overall objective of the project is to reduce costs in the building and construction sector by reducing the damage due to the installation of anchors and bored teel piles in clays.
