Millions of people worldwide live in homes that don't have a physical address. A physical address is a prerequisite for accessing a number of essential services in our daily lives, including emergency services (ambulance/police/rescue and fire), delivery services and in some countries voter registration. The Thima Thina project entails development of an application that allows for the generation of physical addresses for buildings and households that currently do not have one. This same applicaiton will also be used to collect other basic data about the hosueholds that can be used for planning and social policy purposes. The application will be used by local data collectors (ambassadors) who know the area well, thereby contributing to the accuracy of the data. These ambassadors will also be able to update the data continuously, making it more useful for planning purposes than other survey data which is updated less frequently. The application will be tested during a pilot in one ward in a local municipality in South Africa.
