Offentlig prosjektsammendrag
In this project we will develop BioMKR 2 the first non-invasive continuous glucose monitoring device (CGM) that is both affordable and user-friendly. The device will therefore transform the daily lives of diabetics worldwide. For diagnosed diabetics (approximately 50%) with access to treatment, living a healthy life is possible, but still represents a burden, as it is currently both expensive and uncomfortable. Diabetics need to do frequent measurements of their blood sugar (glucose) levels, and based on this either inject insulin or eat food to ensure that glucose levels do not get too high or too low, respectively. The standard (and usually affordable) way of measuring glucose is by using a blood glucose meter (BGM). A BGM measures glucose level directly from the blood by fingerpricking, a physically and socially burdensome process for most diabetics. Additionally, and dangerously, the use of a BGM gives insufficient information of glucose dynamics such as when the glucose level is sinking rapidly. In contrast, CGMs provides a complete picture of the glucose development, and the patient has necessary information for doing appropriate measures. There are, however, two major limitations with current CGMs: User-friendliness and costs. The reason is that current CGMs typically depend on sensors that are invasive - either surgically implanted (and replaced every 90 to 180 days) or semi-invasive (patches with a fixed needle penetrating the skin from a sensor, typically replaced every 7 to 14 days). Because such invasive and semi-invasive CGM sensors must be regularly changed, this results in 1) significant discomfort for the user, 2) potential infections and skin reactions and, typically, 3) high usage costs. In consequence, there does not exist a CGM technology that is both user-friendly and affordable, and that also ensures safe, continuous glucose monitoring. This is what Prediktor Medical is going to provide in this project with the development of BioMKR2.
