Offentlig prosjektsammendrag
With the rapidly growing population in the world, the world needs mineral fertilizers to be able to feed the population. Yara has produced fertilizers for over 100 years. The fertilizers process used in Norway and a few other places in the world is called the Odda process. It has been named after Odda, which was the fertilizer production center in Norway in the 1920-30 years. Erling B. Johnson who lives in Odda is the inventor of process. It uses nitric acid and apatite as main ingredients and produces the nitrogenous fertilizer calcium nitrate and it phosphate fertilizer NPK. This process is, compared to other fertilizer processes, very environmentally friendly and it makes a final product well suited as plant nutrition. The process also consumes a lot of energy and its the project's main focus to develop a novel fuel cell system, capable of dramatically increasing the energy efficiency in the fertilizer process by co-generating NO and electric energy. SOFC is not a new technology but the concept with Co-generation of NO and electricity has never before been demonstrated. The project as such, is an important element in the future fertilizer production in Norway based on decreased energy use and with reduced climate gas emissions.
