Shawcor Norway AS is a leading pipe coating company which insulates pipes for the global offshore oil and gas market. The goal of this project is to develop a pipe coating which has sensors embedded in the insulation. This may enable intrusion and leak detection, monitoring of structural integrity, measurement of flow conditions and insulation properties. A successful project will significantly improve the operation of a pipeline because important parameters can be monitored without the need for direct intervention. This may reduce the cost and environmental impact throughout the lifetime of a pipeline by reducing the need for physical inspection and reduce usage of chemical inhibitors. This may also prevent unexpected sudden pipeline failures.
