The SESAME Solution II project is an e-navigation innovation project that seeks to fully realize and productify the development that began in the SESAME Straits project. The SESAME Straits project created technology to enable shared situational awareness and collaborative decision support, which resulted in an innovative just-in-time arrival technology solution, which will improve efficiency of port and coastal operations, as well as reduce the environmental footprint of shipping when implemented. e-Navigation concerns the electronic exchange of data ship-to-shore for improving safety and security. It was developed by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) in a Strategic Implementation Plan (SIP) that identified solutions such as harmonization, reliability and integration of data in ship navigational equipment, standardized and automated reporting, and improved communication of VTS service portfolio. Solution II of the IMO SIP concerns standardized and automated ship-to-shore reporting, from which this project derives its name, SESAME Solution II. Developing a standardized and automated means of electronic ship-to-shore reporting is the project?s top priority. The project will also further develop the just-in-time arrival technology by linking port services, develop new e-Navigation services for optimizing routes, and use human-centric design principles. The project shall also seek to develop the business case for e-navigation. The project partners include Kystverket, Sjøfartsdirektoratet, SINTEF Ocean, NTNU, the University College of Southeastern Norway, Western Norway University of Applied Sciences, Navtor, and three Kongsberg companies - Kongsberg Norcontrol (project leader), Kongsberg Maritime, and Kongsberg Seatex.
