Sustainability within feed production largely depends on raw material availability and selection. In the recent years the raw material profile of feeds for aquaculture used in Norway and Europe has changed significantly with a broader use of various plant ingredients and less and less inclusion of marine raw materials. The feeds for aquaculture have, in addition, been more and more energy dense. In China the inclusion rate of marine raw materials is still quite high compare to for example Europe and the feeds are less energy dense. It is crucial to develop a performance model and evaluate biological responses of economic value to give us more flexibility due to raw material usage and to be able to produce more sustainable diets for California sea bass.
