Elkem's mission is to contribute to a sustainable future by providing advanced silicon and carbon solutions, creating value for our stakeholders globally. Elkem has a strategy to develop specialty products and high value solutions for its customers. This requires advanced product development, and research towards new product opportunities. Elkem Carbon has a range of carbon products based on coal tar pitch binders in composite with several types of carbon dry aggregates. Coal tar pitch is in the List of substances of very high concern within the REACH regulation, and Elkem Carbon seeks to replace it where possible. The change in binders causes the need to find new recipes and processing parameters to achieve good product function. Solutions in the replacement of high temperature coal tar pitch (CTPht) would enable the metallurgical industry to produce metals and materials without conflict with the REACH regulation. This is a strategically critical challenge for the whole industry and might become a major obstacle for the future existence of European ferro-alloy industry. PAH-emission reductions are important to the worker environment in the industry, and also important for the reduction of emissions from the industry. New combinations of binders and alternative dry aggregate raw materials require extensive research efforts to renew the product portfolio for a better environmental footprint. This project continues the successful development towards environmentally friendly solutions in an extremely demanding product segment.
