Carving Five is developing a camera for automated retinal diagnostics for early warning of diabetic eye diseases through use of artificial intelligence. Diabetes-related eye-diseases are currently the leading cause of blindness in the working-age population globally. If these diseases are detected at an early stage, they can be prevented with quite straightforward measures. In Norway and other Western countries diabetic patients get regular eye-checks enabling early measures to prevent blindness, but only about 10% of the world ´s diabetic population has access to such screening programs, due to high cost of screening cameras and lack trained medical personell capable of capturing and analysing the retinal images. The low-cost automated screening system from CarvingFive will enable retinal screening by diabetic primary care personell in under-privileged countries and patient groups, enabling earlier detection of eye-diseases, preventing blindness by enabling earlier follow-up.
