Whilst medicaments are used there is strong market pressure to reduce the use of antibiotics in shrimp farming. Disease and reduced robustness may result in reduced appetite, loss of condition, reduced survival post transfer or mortality. Depending on the farm can be between 80%-20% representing a high economic cost to producers. Currently, Vibrio parahaemolyticus is one the main disease challenge in shrimp farming causing important costs for this sector. Despite the efforts made by the feeding producing companies, the available functional feedings in the marked do not satisfy completely the challenges regarding disease resistance. In this context, the present project aimed to improved functional diets containing health additives that could improve both gut morphology/barrier and immune function as natural defenses against Vibrio parahaemolyticus. It is expected that the new knowledge resulted from this project help in the development of improved diets designed specifically to boost disease resistance in shrimp.
