The InhibioList project will enable sustainable abatement of Listeria, a major food safety concern for Norway´s important aquaculture industry. It is based on previous work done by the project partners Inhibio AS and the Norwegian Veterinary Institute on certain compounds showing very promising results in biofilm prevention. The project will prepare the use of these compounds in solutions, paints, coatings and polymer materials, to radically reduce the prevalence of Listeria in the aquaculture industry, including transport, processing and storage. Farmed fish is one of the main export commodities from Norway. In 2012, the Norwegian aquaculture industry's seafood exports amounted to NOK 31.5 billion1. Ninety-five percent of Norwegian production is exported, with the EU being the main market. In the marketing of Norwegian farmed fish, expressions like “pure”, “clean” and “safe” are emphasized, e.g.: “Salmon from Norway are closely monitored to guarantee that only pure, completely safe fish — free of disease, dyes and toxins —make it to your table" Consumer disease outbreaks due to contaminated products will have negative effects on the reputation and sales of the whole industry.
